18th-Ranked Jeffs Open Season with 2-0 Win Over Visiting Trinity
September 10, 2005
AMHERST, MA - The 18th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team defeated visiting NESCAC rival Trinity College in both teams ' season and conference opener on Saturday, on the strength of goals by first-year striker Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) and rookie midfielder Mary Marvel (Williamsburg, MA). Junior goalkeeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael , CA) needed just two saves to notch her 11th career shutout for the Jeffs.
The first 10 minutes of action were a battle for possession and field position, but Yesnik broke the scoreless tie at the 13:51-mark off an assist from classmate Alanna Darling (Charlton , MA). The goal came after junior forward Amy Armstrong (Avon, CT) ignited a flurry of shots on Bantam sophomore goalkeeper Tara Finucane (Branford, CT), who made two saves in quick succession before Darling found an open Yesnik for the score. The Jeffs kept the pressure on the Bantams for the remainder of the half, outshooting Trinity 12-2. However, Finucane managed to keep the game close, tallying all seven of her saves in the opening period.
Amherst kept up the assault after the break, registering another seven shots and four corner kicks, while the Jeff defense stymied the Trinity attack down the stretch. The Jeffs allowed just two shots overall and none for the final 78 minutes, thanks to the strong play of senior defenders Kaitlin Hill (Andover, MA) and Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI), junior Liz Foley (Tolland, CT) and first-year Kathryn Bentley (Atherton, CA). The Jeffs added an insurance score in the 82nd minute, as Marvel punched a nifty header into the back of the net off a corner from sophomore midfielder Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT).
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University.
