Amherst Women's Capture First Place at ECAC Championships; Men Finish Eighth

WATERFORD, CT - Led by first-year Elise Tropiano's (Plainville, NY) eighth-place finish, the Amherst women's cross country team claimed the ECAC Championship crown, while junior Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) was the men's top runner, finishing 15th and leading the Jeffs to an eighth-place showing.

Tropiano and Boley's finishes earned them both spots on the 2005 All-ECAC Team. They were joined by Jeff sophomores Meg Ray (Menands, NY) and Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS), who took 10th and 14th place, respectively, in the women's race.

Tropiano's time of 22:52 in the 6k was only 54 seconds shy of race winner Meg Young of Springfield College, and nine seconds ahead of Ray. Mortimer crossed the line seven seconds later, while senior Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) and first-year Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) took 17th and 22nd , respectively. Sophomores Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) and Lucy Sheehan (Longmeadow, MA) rounded out the women's lineup at 55th and 93rd . The women's team led the field with 71 points, edging NESCAC rivals Tufts University, Williams College, Middlebury College, and Colby College.

On the men's side, Boley completed the 8k race in 26:19, while junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and first-year Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) finished together at 26:57, good for 46th and 47th place. Senior Evan Guiney (Cooperstown, NY), sophomore Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) and junior Eric Glustrom (Boulder, CO) placed 60th, 92nd and 132nd for the Jeffs. Junior Steve Monsulik of Bates College took first place in the 8k, completing the course in 25:19. Williams College brought home the men's crown with 46 points.

Top runners from both Amherst squads were held out of this weekend's meet in preparation for the NCAA DIII Regional Championships this Saturday, November 12 at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield, MA.
