Amherst Women's Cross Country Fifth at New England Championships, Men 14th

Boston, MA - The Amherst College women's cross country team finished fifth, while the men's team came in 14th at the New England Championships held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Saturday. Junior All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) paced the women in the 5k race, finishing third overall with a time of 17:44, while sophomore Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) led the men in the 8k race, with a 19th-place showing in 25:35.
In a race featuring 301 runners and 45 teams, the women excelled, as Garrahan was followed by sophomore Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN), first-year Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) and sophomore Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA), who finished 27th, 41st and 73rd, respectively. Sophomore Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) crossed the line in 98th, while classmate Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) and rookie Zandra Walton (Wayne, PA) followed in 143rd and 155th.
On the men's side, Morrissey raced to a 19th-place showing out of 321 harriers, just 39 seconds behind meet champion Owen Washburn of Brown University. First-year Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) and junior Rich Wilson (Columbus, OH) nabbed 58th and 97th , while sophomore Mike Harbus (New York, NY) followed closely behind in 115th. Juniors Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) and Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) and senior co-captain Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) rounded out the top seven for the men.
Both squads return to action Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Little Three Championships, hosted by Williams College.
