Amherst Women First, Men Second at Season-Opening Amherst Invitational

AMHERST, MA - Junior All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) captured her first victory of the season to lead the Amherst College women's cross country contingent to its third straight Amherst Invitational team title on Saturday. The Amherst women completed a near-sweep by capturing five of the first six places, as they bested second-place Bates College by over 30 points . Meanwhile, the Amherst men, led by sophomore sensations Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) and Mike Harbus (New York, NY), placed second, just eight points behind team champion Bates.
On the women's side, Garrahan was followed by first-year Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI), sophomores Vanessa Sochat (Amherst, NH) and Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and senior Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA), who finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Sophomore Laura Mortimer ( Jackson , MS) crossed the line in 11th place, while first-years Liz Dalton (Wayne , PA) and Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) followed closely behind in 13th- and 15th-place.
On the men's side, Morrissey raced to a second-place showing, 27 seconds behind meet champion Dan Johnson (Detroit Lakes, MN) of Bates. Harbus, junior Rich Wilson (Columbus, OH) and first-year Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) also posted top 10 finishes, nabbing fifth, ninth and tenth, respectively. Junior Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) (12th), senior Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) (15th), and junior Robert Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) (19th) rounded out the top seven for the men.
Both squads return to action next Saturday, Sept. 17 at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.
