Jeffs Finish Second in Hoehn Division, 10th Overall at CSA Team Championships

February 20, 2006

PRINCETON, NJ - The Amherst College men's squash team finished second in the Hoehn Division (for teams ranked 9-16 nationally) and 10th overall at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships, hosted by Princeton University over the weekend. The Jeffs toppled Bowdoin College, 7-2, and upset Brown University, 5-4, to reach the championship match, where they fell to top-seeded Cornell, 7-2, to finish their season 9-10.

Amherst ran past the Polar Bears in the opening round as four players posted 3-0 victories en route to the win. Amherst rookie phenol Drew Blacker rallied from a 2-0 deficit and secured a thrilling 10-9 win in the fourth game to earn a 3-2 victory at the No. 1 position, and senior tri-captains Tyler Mixter and Nick Haslett both battled to 3-1 victories at the No. 7 and 8 positions, respectively.

The Jeffs did most of their damage in Saturday’s 5-4 upset victory over Brown in the middle of the lineup. Junior Peter Hatfield trailed 2-1 in the No. 4 position before winning the final two games for the victory, while first-year Gautam Kalani and junior Stu Landesburg boasted lopsided 3-0 wins in the No. 5 and 6 slots. Blacker nearly repeated Friday’s comeback, knotting the No. 1 match at 2-2 before dropping the final game, however Haslett and rookie Jerome Giovinazzo won the No. 8 and 9 matches to seal the victory.

Haslett and Giovinazzo each picked up their third win of the weekend in Sunday’s Hoehn Division Championship match, but top-seeded Cornell proved too much for Amherst as the Big Red secured the 7-2 win. Kalani and junior tri-captain Auloke Mathur were the only other Jeffs to win games as Kalani suffered a hard-fought 3-2 loss and Mathur managed a win in the third game, but fell 3-1.

The Jeffs wrap up their season at the CSA Individual Championships, to be held at Amherst College, Friday-Sunday, March 3-5.
