NEW LONDON, CT - The Amherst College men's soccer team upended NESCAC host Connecticut College on Wednesday afternoon, 4-1. Rookie striker Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) scored twice for the Jeffs, while seniors Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) and Jay Kloppenberg (Wellesley, MA) added a goal apiece.
Amherst opened the scoring at the 13:01-mark, as Lynch notched his third goal of the season off a Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) assist. The Camels responded 16 minutes later when first-year Matt Hula (Litchfield, CT) fired a shot from 15 yards out and tucked it just inside the left post for the equalizer. The Jeffs battled back, tallying 10 first-half shots, but couldn't add another goal in the frame, thanks to strong play from Connecticut College sophomore goalkeeper Andy White (Edina, MN), and the score remained knotted heading into the break.
Amherst turned up the heat in the second stanza, peppering White with 12 more shots, and notched the eventual game-winner when Lynch knocked home his second goal of the day off a Gannon cross at the 66:51-mark. Gannon converted a penalty kick just three minutes later to pad the lead, and Kloppenberg put the game out of reach at the 72:03-mark as he found the back of the net for the first time this season off a Jake Duker (Newton, MA) assist.
White finished with four saves in a losing effort, while Amherst senior Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) and rookie Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA) combined to tally three saves in the win.
The Jeffs improve to 5-2-2 (2-2-1 NESCAC) on the season, while Connecticut College drops to 2-6-0 (0-5-0 NESCAC).
Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon against visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
