Jeffs Remain Undefeated with 2-1 Win at Roger Williams

September 11, 2005

BRISTOL, RI - Sophomore Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) scored his second goal in as many days to lead the Amherst College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at non-conference foe Roger Williams University on Sunday. Downs's score gives him two on the season, while first-year Nick Lynch (Kingston, Jamaica) tallied his first career goal to seal the victory.

Roger Williams took a 1-0 lead in the first half as junior Ryan Wohlstrom (Guilford, CT) scored on a breakaway. Downs knotted the score with just over 15 minutes left in regulation, converting a corner kick from classmate Jonathan Pryor (Roslyn, NY). Lynch scored the game-winner in highlight-reel fashion, bouncing a 40-yard shot off the left post and into the goal after intercepting an errant clear from Roger Williams junior goalkeeper Kevin Deegan (Seymour, CT).

Amherst senior goalie Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) finished with three saves as the Jeffs improved to 2-0, while Deegan grabbed nine saves as the Hawks sustained their first loss of the year, falling to 3-1-1.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. at NESCAC rival Bates College.
