AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to visiting NESCAC rival Connecticut College on Wednesday afternoon. Junior midfielder Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY) notched the lone goal for the Jeffs, who fell to 5-8 (2-6 NESCAC), while the Camels improved to 8-5 (4-4 NESCAC).
Conn. College opened the scoring at the 16:15-mark, when sophomore Jill Mauer (Millbrook, NY) converted a penalty stroke. The Camels continued to pressure, but Amherst sophomore netminder Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) stymied the attack, posting six of her eight saves in the first half and turning away a penalty stroke to keep the Jeffs within one heading into the break.
Amherst came out strong in the second stanza and added the equalizer when Carr-Harris found the back of the cage just three minutes into the frame. The teams battled in scoreless fashion for fifteen minutes before the Camels posted the game-winner at 16:36 as junior Sage Shanley (Westerly, RI) knocked home a dish from sophomore Alex Albright (Wilmington, DE).
Amherst sits tied for seventh in the conference with just one game remaining, and needs a victory at Williams College on Saturday to qualify for the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. Game-time is set for 11 a.m.
