Jeffs Suffer Narrow 2-1 Loss to No. 9 Middlebury

October 19, 2005

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to visiting ninth-ranked conference foe Middlebury College on Wednesday afternoon. The Jeffs fell to 5-6 (2-4 NESCAC) on the season, while the Panthers improved to 8-2 (6-1 NESCAC).

The teams battled for 27 minutes of scoreless play before Middlebury got on the board at the 7:17-mark when sophomore Nina Daugherty (Greenwich, CT) found the back of the cage after collecting a rebound from a Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) save. The Panthers continued to pressure, but Boucher posted nine of her thirteen saves in the first half to keep the Jeffs' hopes alive heading into the break.

Middlebury notched the eventual game-winner in the second stanza when sophomore Reid Berrien (Westport, CT) took a ball in space at the top of the circle and fired a low laser just inside the left post to give the Panthers a two-goal margin. Amherst responded eight minutes later when senior tri-captain Molly Gilbert (Penn Valley, PA) tallied her third goal of the season off a dish across the goal-mouth from junior Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY). The Jeffs continued to pressure and nearly knocked home the equalizer in the waning minutes of the game when Gilbert fired another shot on goal, but senior defender Janie Mackey (St. Louis, MO) came up with a critical defensive save to seal the victory for Middlebury.

The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at against visiting NESCAC rival Wesleyan University.
