October 13, 2005
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team fell at non-conference host Babson College on Thursday night, 4-1. Sophomore Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) scored the lone goal for the Jeffs, as they fell to 5-4 on the season, while the Beavers improved to 13-3.
Amherst took an early lead when Porcaro notched an unassisted goal, her second of the season, at the 13:42-mark. The Jeffs kept up the pressure and loosed five more first-half shots on Babson rookie netminder Elissa Slovin (Andover, MA), but couldn't find the back of the cage, and the score remained 1-0 heading into the break.
The Beavers responded in the second stanza when senior Gina Giardina (St. Louis, MO) tallied the equalizer off a feed from sophomore Annie Pease (Waterville, ME) at the 30:00-mark. The teams then battled for 12 scoreless minutes before Babson knocked home the eventual game-winner, as Pease scored off a Brittany Stevens (Dudley, MA) dish. The Beavers added an insurance tally just two minutes later, and tacked on another in the waning minutes of play to put the game out of reach.
Slovin finished with ten saves in the victory, while Jeff sophomore goalkeeper Kathleen Boucher (Washington, D.C.) posted nine saves in a losing effort.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC rival Colby College.
