First-year Mary Noonan scored her first two collegiate goals on
Jeffs Cruise Past WNEC, 3-0
October 6, 2005
AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team cruised past visiting non-conference foe Western New England College (WNEC) on Thursday, 3-0, snapping the Golden Bears' four-game win streak and improving to 5-3 on the season. Rookie Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) notched her first two collegiate goals in the win, while senior tri-captain Molly Gilbert (Penn Valley, PA) added one.
The first half was a scoreless battle thanks to strong defensive play from both sides, as WNEC senior goalkeeper Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) tallied four saves in the period to keep the Amherst attack at bay. Jeff sophomore netminder Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) was not to be outdone as she kept the count even at the 7:30-mark with a sprawling, right-footed kick-save, and the teams headed into the break deadlocked.
Amherst turned up the heat in the second stanza, and tallied the eventual game-winner as Gilbert knocked home her second goal of the season off a Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) assist at the 28:10-mark. Noonan added an insurance tally nine minutes later when she took a crossing pass from junior midfielder Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY) and slotted it between Brown and the right post. The Jeffs kept up the pressure and Noonan put the game out of reach with her second goal of the day after another Porcaro dish.
Brown finished with five saves in a losing effort, while Boucher tallied two to secure her third shutout of the season.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon against
visiting 11th-ranked NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
