September 26, 2004

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - Amherst College first-year Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) dominated the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Women’s Tennis Championships, hosted by Williams College over the weekend, earning both the singles and doubles crowns. After dropping just one set en route to the singles title, she teamed with senior Rachel Holt (New York, NY) to take the doubles championship as well.

Menezes, unseeded in the singles tournament, took down Connecticut College's Lisa Steckmest, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round before defeating teammate Katie Hudson ’07 (Los Altos, CA), 6-1, 6-3, in the second. She edged seventh-seeded Amy Roche of Middlebury College 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in the third round and went on to upset second-seeded Sara Hughes of Colby College, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Menezes disposed of her third straight seeded opponent, Middlebury’s Claire Smyser, in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1, and defeated top-seeded Jen Luten of Tufts University in the championship match, 6-4, 6-3. Holt, who finished second overall last fall and won the event in 2002, reached the third round before bowing out.

Top-seeded Menezes and Holt breezed through their first two doubles matches, 8-0, downing Amanda Poe and Laura Demoureille of Conn. College in the first round and Lauren Gray and Christine D'Elia of Bowdoin College in the second. They bested Babson’s Francesca Russo and Erin Seu, 8-4, in the quarterfinals and defeated Smith’s Lauren Kemp and Ruth Linz, 8-2, to advance to the championship match, where they topped No. 3 seed Sara Hughes and Allison Dunn of Colby College, 8-3.

Amherst returns to action Sunday at 9 a.m. at Bowdoin College.
