Jeffs Finish Third at NCAA Championships, Edge Middlebury 5-4

May 20, 2005

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Amherst College women’s tennis team won the third-place match at the NCAA Tournament Championships, hosted by Kalamazoo (Mich.) College on Friday, edging Middlebury College 5-4. Amherst junior Kristen Raverta (W. Springfield, MA) broke a 4-4 tie and won the match with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Middlebury first-year Amanda Berck (Roslyn, NY) at No. 3 singles.

Amherst opened up a 2-1 edge in doubles play as senior quad-captains Rachel Holt (New York, NY) and Tristan Hedrick (Walnut Creek, CA) toppled Middlebury sophomores Jackie Ross (Ipswich, MA) and Claire Smyser (Houston, TX) in the No. 1 matchup, 8-5, and Raverta and rookie Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) claimed the No. 2 tilt 8-4 over Berck and sophomore Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, NY). The Jeffs nearly pulled out a doubles sweep, but Middlebury’s No. 3 pair of junior Maren Messing (New York, NY) and sophomore Emily Holick (Sudbury, MA) outlasted Amherst senior quad-captain Erin Murphy (Yonkers, NY) and first-year Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) to earn a 9-8 (2) tie-breaker victory.

Hedrick gave the Jeffs a 3-1 advantage, downing Ross at No. 2 singles, and sophomore Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) brought Amherst within one match of victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Middlebury first-year Amy Berkman (Shelburne, VT) in the No. 6 bout. Middlebury would not go quietly as Holick and Roche posted respective straight-set victories over Holt and Snyder to deadlock the score at 4-4. Despite dropping the opening set, 7-5, Raverta battled back, reeling off 6-2 and 6-3 sets to win the No. 3 match and seal the victory.

Amherst wrapped up its season at 12-3, while Middlebury finished at 15-4.

Raverta goes on to compete in the NCAA singles championships on Saturday at Kalamazoo, where she’ll open against Katie Frick of UC Santa Cruz.
