Jeffs Win Second Straight NESCAC Crown

May 1, 2005

MIDDLEBURY, VT - After sharing its first-ever conference title last season, the Amherst College women’s tennis team grabbed sole possession of the crown at the 2005 NESCAC Championships, hosted by Middlebury College over the weekend, winning three-of-four singles flights and sweeping all three doubles brackets. Senior Tristan Hedrick (Walnut Creek, CA) and rookies Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) each won respective singles titles, while Hedrick teamed with classmate Rachel Holt (New York, NY), Snyder paired with junior Kristen Raverta (W. Springfield, MA) and Stein joined senior Erin Murphy (Yonkers, NY) to sweep doubles competition.

Hedrick took home the “B” singles title, defeating Tufts’ Jennifer Lejb in the finals, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2, and Snyder bested Tufts’ Stephanie Ruley in the “C” singles championship match, 6-4, 6-0. Stein won every set in the “D” bracket, finishing with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Williams’ Jane Kelley. The Jeffs dominated doubles play in all three flights. Hedrick and Holt finished off the “A” bracket with an 8-5 win over Jennifer Luten and Kylyn Deary of Tufts, Raverta and Snyder posted a matching 8-5 victory over the Tufts pairing of Lejb and Neda Pisheva in the “B” finals and Murphy and Stein earned an 8-6 win over Middlebury’s Maren Messing and Emily Holick to claim the “C” flight. The Jeffs fell just short of sweeping the tournament as Raverta finished second in the “A” singles championship, falling to Middlebury’s Amy Roche in the finals, 7-5, 6-0.

Amherst amassed 31 points to claim the title, while Tufts finished second with 23 points and host Middlebury placed third with 18 points. Williams failed to earn a share of the title for the first time in tournament history, coming in fourth with just 10 points.

Amherst returns to action next weekend at the NCAA Regional Championships. Locations and times for regional play have not yet been announced.
