October 26, 2004

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Amherst College women’s soccer team, ranked 21st in the nation and third in New England, upended non-conference host Rhode Island College (RIC) on Tuesday, 3-1. Senior tri-captain Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) tallied a pair of scores and classmate Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) had a goal and an assist as the Jeffs won their fourth straight, improving to 8-1-4.

Harmeling opened the scoring in the 12th minute off Showler’s fourth assist of the year to give the Jeffs an early 1-0 edge. Showler pushed the lead to 2-0 just after the break, scoring off a feed from junior Sarah Coleman (New Haven, CT), and Harmeling capped Amherst’s scoring at the 55:22-mark, heading in a corner kick from first-year Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT) for her team-high sixth goal of the year. The host Anchorwomen spoiled the Jeffs’ shutout bid in the 88th minute as senior Elena Sanborn (N. Scituate, RI) lofted in a shot from nearly 30 yards out.

Sophomore goalie Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) and junior Emily Durwood (Kansas City, KS) combined in goal for Amherst, collecting four and two saves, respectively, while Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) posted five for RIC, which fell to 9-9 with the loss.

Amherst wraps up its regular-season slate on Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College.
