Amherst Women's Cross Country 12th at NCAA Championships

November 20, 2004

EAU CLAIRE, WI - Behind respective fifth- and 24th-place individual showings by senior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and sophomore Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), Amherst finished 12th in the final team standings at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships, hosted by Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday.

Hamill earned her fourth consecutive cross country All-America award, covering the 6k course in 21:34.4, while Garrahan claimed cross country All-America honors for the second straight season, finishing in 22:18.3. This marks Hamill’s 14th career All-America award and Garrahan’s fourth. First-years Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN), Katie Moravec (Chico, CA), and Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) took 124th, 155th and 177th, respectively, with times of 23:32.5, 23:59.5 and 24:22.5. Junior Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) grabbed 181st in 24:27.3, and senior co-captain Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) finished in 24:53.3, good for 196th.

Williams College captured the national team title with 110 points, 19 ahead of second-place Middlebury College, and Wartburg College senior Missy Buttry took home the individual crown, finishing in 20:22.0.

This was the Jeffs’ second straight trip to the national championship meet as they finished fifth last year behind Hamill and Garrahan’s fifth- and tenth-place showings. The pair look to add to their All-America plaudits in the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons as Hamill defends her 5,000-meter indoor and 10,000-meter outdoor national titles and Garrahan looks to improve upon her second- and third-place finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter outdoor run, respectively.
