Amherst Women's Cross Country Third, Men Sixth at ECAC Championships

GRAFTON, MA - Led by first-years Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) and Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS), the Amherst College womenís cross country team captured third place at the ECAC Championships, held at the Tufts University Farm Course, while the men, led by sophomore Nate Freese (Tunbridge, VT), took sixth.

Moravec covered the 6k course in 23:36, finishing 10th, while Mortimer crossed the line 12 seconds later in 14th place as the pair earned All-ECAC honors. Junior Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) and senior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) placed 23rd and 26th, respectively, while first-years Margaret Ray (Menands, NY), Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA), and Lucy Sheehan (Longmeadow, MA) finished 31st, 44th, and 58th.

Freese claimed 21st place in the 8k race with his 27:59 finish, while junior Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA), first-year Mike Harbus (New York, NY) and sophomore John Babbott (Ojai, CA) placed 41st, 44th, and 46th, respectively. Junior Evan Guiney (Cooperstown, NY) grabbed 56th place, sophomore Fraser Kitchell (Seattle, WA) finished 73rd and classmate Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) placed 87th.

First-year Joellon Arons of Coast Guard and junior Fabian Mejia of Salem State College captured first place in the womenís and menís races, respectively. Williams College topped the womenís field of 24 teams, while Tufts University took the menís title, besting a field of 34 teams.

Top runners from both Amherst squads were held out of this weekendís meet in preparation for the NCAA DIII Regional Championships this Saturday, November 13 at the Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, ME.
