October 4, 2004

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Amherst junior Danny Babkes (Baltimore, MD) reached the semifinals at the Wilson ITA New England Men’s Tennis Championships, hosted by MIT over the weekend, winning four straight matches before falling to eventual tournament champion Brian Waldron of Middlebury College.

Babkes breezed through the first two rounds, defeating MIT’s Mark Egan, 6-3, 6-3, and Ted Haley of Williams College, 6-1, 6-1. Middlebury’s Ari Beilin proved to be a test in the round of 16, but Babkes prevailed in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Babkes downed another Middlebury foe in the quarterfinals, upending Salih Unsal in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, but fell to Waldron in three sets, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2. Amherst sophomore Lenny Lepner (Tartu, Estonia) and rookie Geoff Schwartz (Dallas, TX) each won their first-round matchups in singles play, but both bowed in the second round. Lepner and Schwartz also teamed in doubles competition and won their first-round matchup before falling to Waldron and Nate Edmunds in the second. Middlebury’s Kevin Bergesen and George Mayer took home the doubles crown.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. against visiting Brandeis University.
