Jeffs Dominate ECAC Championship for Second Straight Year

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Amherst College menís tennis team took home first place for the second straight year at the ECAC Menís Tennis Championships, held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Vassar College. The Jeffs won the event by the largest margin in its eight-year history at Vassar, winning five of six flight championships and totaling 23 points, 10.5 more than second-place finishers Salve Regina University and NYU.

Amherst junior Danny Babkes (Baltimore, MD) took the first singles flight in straight sets, downing Georgetownís Etienne Paris 6-4, 6-0 after a first-round bye, and defeating Matt Urbanetti of Salve Regina 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Lord Jeff sophomore Lenny Lepner (Tartu, Estonia) won the second singles flight, taking down Ted Tywang of Georgetown 7-5, 6-1, in the first round, John Colavita of St. Thomas Aquinas 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals, and NYUís Mike Guervich in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the finals. Amherst first-year Michael Mintz (New York, NY) reached the finals of the third singles flight, but fell to Salve Reginaís Rob Norton 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Fellow rookie Geoff Schwarz (Dallas, TX) and senior Max Rettig (Rockford, IL) claimed the fourth and fifth singles titles, respectively, while first-years Jeffrey Wan (Staten Island, NY) and Tal Avrahami (Riverdale, NY) earned the doubles crown.

Amherst returns to action this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Omni ITA Championships, hosted by MIT.
