Jeffs Rebound with 3-1 Win at WNEC

FROM A WNEC RELEASE

October 9, 2004

SPRINGFIELD, MA - After suffering its first loss of the season Saturday at Middlebury, the Amherst College men's soccer team rebounded with a 3-1 victory at non-conference foe Western New England College (WNEC) on Tuesday. Junior midfielder Ian Lovett (Newton, MA) notched the game-winning score in the 78th minute to lead the Jeffs to their eighth win of the year, while WNEC fell to 9-5-1.

The Golden Bears drew first blood quickly as sophomore Tim Larocca tallied his first goal of the season just 25 seconds into play. The Jeffs evened the score at the 5:07-mark as first-year Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and senior co-captain Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN) fed junior Christian Alexander (Santa Fe, NM) for his first goal of the year. The score remained deadlocked for the next 72 minutes until Lovett knocked in the game-winner off a feed from fellow junior Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA). Gannon added an insurance goal with under four minutes left to play off an assist from classmate Adrien de Bontin (Kenilworth, IL).

Senior Dan Glenn (Berkeley, CA) was credited with three stops in net for the Jeffs, while WNEC senior Jay Martyn collected five saves.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC opponent Colby College.
