17th-Ranked Jeffs Suffer First Loss, Fall in Overtime at Middlebury, 3-2

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Amherst College menís soccer team, ranked 17th in the nation and third in New England, suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling in overtime at NESCAC foe Middlebury College, 3-2. Middlebury first-year David LaRocca netted a bicycle kick 4:46 into the extra frame as the Panthers improved to 6-1-1 (3-1-1 NESCAC), while the Jeffs fell to 7-1 (3-1 NESCAC).

Amherst sophomore Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) opened the scoring 5:37 into play, netting a feed from junior Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA). The Jeffs increased their lead to 2-0 in the second half on a penalty kick from junior Ben Lavely (Louisville, KY), but Middlebury answered with goals by seniors John Rusten and Kellan Florio to tie the game. Florioís goal came with just 1:30 left in regulation to force the extra frame.

Amherst junior goalie Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) nabbed six saves, while senior Craig Hirsh had four for Middlebury

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. at non-conference opponent WNEC.
