Wohl Scores in Sixth Straight Game, Powers Undefeated Jeffs Past Springfield, 2-1

September 29, 2004

AMHERST, MA - Sophomore forward Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) notched the game winner with 7:58 left in regulation, extending his scoring streak to six games with his conference-best seventh goal of the season, as the undefeated Amherst College menís soccer team improved to 6-0 with a dramatic 2-1 non-league win over visiting Springfield College (3-6) on Wednesday.

Wohl, who leads the NESCAC in points (15), goals (7) and goals per game (1.17), broke a 1-1 tie in the 83rd minute after junior Joe Gannonís (Hanson, MA) shot pulled Springfield goalie B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, DE) wide of the box. Wohl quickly pounced on the rebound and sidestepped a pair of defenders before calmly sliding a shot into the bottom left corner of the net, giving Gannon his team- and NESCAC-leading fifth assist of the season.

Gannon assisted on Amherstís first goal as well, sending a corner kick to sophomore Rob Madden (New Haven, CT) in front of the net for Madden's third goal of the year 5:14 into the second half.

Springfield knotted the score 10:17 later when junior Justin Pepoli (Ashburnham, MA) collected a loose ball in front of the net and connected for his third goal of the season.

Sturdivant was under siege all afternoon long, finishing with 11 saves as the host Jeffs outshot the Pride 29-10. Amherst junior goalie Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) turned away a trio of shots in the win. Amherst senior Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN) and junior Ben Lavely (Louisville, KY) were stellar on defense throughout.

Amherst will look for its seventh straight win Saturday at noon at NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
