Jeffs Remain Unbeaten with 2-0 Win Over Tufts

September 25, 2004

AMHERST, MA - With goals by sophomores Rob Madden (New Haven, CT) and Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA), along with a stifling defensive performance, led by junior Ben Lavely (Louisville, KY), the Amherst College menís soccer team remained unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play with a decisive 2-0 win over visiting NESCAC rival Tufts University on Saturday. The Jeffs, who entered the game ranked eighth in New England but sure to rise in the polls, have allowed just three goals in four games this season. Tufts dropped to 2-2-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the loss.

Madden opened the scoring just 3:58 into the game off a crossing pass from junior striker Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA), who racked up his team-high third assist of the season in giving the Jeffs an early 1-0 cushion. Amherst held its one-goal advantage until the 90th minute, when Wohl punctuated the victory with his team-leading fifth tally of the season, courtesy of a nifty feed from Madden.

Meanwhile, Lavely dogged the Jumbo attack all afternoon long as the Jeff defensive unit held visiting Tufts to just seven shots. Amherst junior goalie Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) needed just five saves to record his 11th career shutout.

Tufts senior keeper Matt Sullivan (Medfield, MA) turned away four shots in defeat.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m. at non-league foe Salve Regina University.
