September 15, 2004

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men’s soccer team improved to 3-0 on Wednesday, defeating visiting non-conference foe Rivier College, 6-1. Senior Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO), juniors Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) and Victor Bowman-Rivera (Rolling Hills Est., CA), sophomore Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) and first-years Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and Ryan O’Donnell (Belchertown, MA) each found the goal, while rookie Joe Martinez (Bethlehem, CT) dished out a pair of assists as the Jeffs outshot the Raiders 34-4.

Downs opened the scoring just 1:36 into play as Walker fired a crossing pass into the middle, where he redirected it with a header for the score. Gannon doubled the lead on a feed from senior co-captain Matt Langione (Boston, MA) at the 20:39-mark, and Downs returned the favor to Walker just four minutes later to push the score to 3-0. The visiting Raiders picked up their lone score on a penalty kick by Dan O’Leary just before the half.

Wohl opened the second-half scoring as Gannon fed him on a free kick just 2:25 after the break, and Martinez picked up his pair of assists, finding O’Donnell at the 52:55-mark and Bowman-Rivera with just over 10 minutes left in play.

Senior Dan Glenn (Berkeley, CA) and sophomore Mohamed Zeidan (Eden Prairie, MN) each collected a save for the Jeffs, while first-year Kevin Moyer posted 16 saves in goal for Rivier, which fell to 0-3 with the loss

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m., hosting NESCAC rival Bates College.
