Jeffs Open Season with 3-2 Overtime Win at Trinity

September 11, 2004

HARTFORD, CT - The Amherst College menís soccer team opened with a 3-2 double overtime victory at NESCAC rival Trinity College in both teamsí season- and conference-opener on Saturday. Sophomore sensation Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) forced overtime with his second goal of the contest, a header from first-year Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) with 5:30 left in the second half, and fellow sophomore Rob Madden (New Haven, CT) punched in the game-winner off a free kick from junior Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) with just 1:05 left in the second overtime.

Amherst sophomore Benjamin Bridges (New York, NY) and senior Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) found Wohl four minutes into play for the early lead, and the Jeffs carried the one-goal advantage into the half. However, the host Bantams would answer as sophomore Russell Smith (Fair Haven, NJ) evened the count in the 56th minute, and Trinity took the lead less than 11 minutes later on a tally by senior Craig Schneider (Manchester, CT). With just under six minutes remaining Madden sent a throw-in to Downs, who flicked the ball to Wohl for the game-tying score.

After a scoreless first overtime, the Jeffs nearly ended the contest just 10 seconds into the second extra frame as Downs hit the post off a corner kick. Amherst continued to dominate possession throughout the period and finally ended the marathon on Maddenís score from Gannon.

Amherst junior Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) nabbed nine saves in goal, while Trinity first-year Scott Johnson (Plymouth, MA) collected 16.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Roger Williams University.
