Jeffs Stymied at No. 4 Middlebury, 4-0

October 9, 2004

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Amherst College field hockey team was shut out at fourth-ranked NESCAC rival Middlebury College on Saturday, 4-0. The undefeated Panthers tallied three first-half goals en route to their ninth win of the season and sixth in conference play, while the Jeffs suffered their second consecutive loss and fell to 4-4 and 2-3.

Middlebury opened the scoring at 29:04 in the first period as senior Lauryn Nicasio tapped in a nice feed from sophomore Claire Edelen. The Panthers pushed the lead to 2-0 as Edelen punched in a rebounded shot from junior Ashley Lyddane, and first-year Reid Berrien made it a 3-0 game on a breakaway with 2:26 left in the first half. Nicasio accounted for the lone second-half score, deflecting a shot off Amherst senior netminder K.C. Cosentino’s (Greenwich, CT) pads for her second goal of the game.

Middlebury sophomore goalie Meg McGillen tallied three saves, while Cosentino and first-year Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) collected 10 and two saves, respectively.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-conference foe Babson College.
