Jeffs Drop 3-2 Heartbreaker to Bates

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College Volleyball team fell to NESCAC rival Bates College 3-2 (30-24, 26-30, 26-30, 30-22, 15-8) on Friday night. Bates senior co-captain Liz Wanless (Belleville, IL) and junior Olivia Zurek (Arlington, MA) led the visiting Bobcats with 25 kills each and 21 and 24 digs, respectively. Amherst junior Nicole Davidson (Los Angeles, CA) and first-year Kristen Quinn (Los Angeles, CA) tallied 14 kills each in the loss.

After dropping the first game, the Jeffs rallied to win the next two led by first-year Ashley Pestotnik (Arvada, CO), who had eight of her 10 kills in the two wins. Also leading the Jeff attack were senior co-captain Lauren Wong (San Francisco, CA) and sophomore Sara Bruggeman (Boulder, CO) with nine kills each. However, Bates bounced back to win the final two games led by Zurek’s six kills in the fifth and deciding game. Amherst junior setter Annie Hoeksma (Los Angeles, CA) posted 51 assists and seven kills while her Bates couterpart, junior co-captain Kristen Johnson (Denver, CO) amounted 61 assists. The Jeffs collected 102 team digs led by sophomore Kate Raddock’s (Stamford, CT) team-best 29 digs. First-year Mikela Yaramawai (Kamuela, HI) added 21 digs, Davidson contributed 16 and senior co-captain Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) chipped in 14.

In other NESCAC play, Tufts University blanked Bowdoin College 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-20) at Amherst’s LeFrak Gymnasium.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow against NESCAC rival Colby College at Noon, and against Bowdoin College at 2:30 p.m.
