14th-Ranked Amherst Advances in NCAA Women's Soccer Tourney with 1-0 Win Over Bridgewater St.

Novermber 12, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Sophomore midfielder Sarah Coleman (New Haven, CT) scored the lone goal just over two minutes into the second half to give 14th-ranked Amherst College a 1-0 win over visiting Bridgewater State College in the first-round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Wednesday. The Jeffs will face Endicott College - which edged Emmanuel College 1-0 on Wednesday - in the NCAA Regional Semifinals Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at host Wheaton College.

Amherst’s defense, which has allowed only two goals in its last 10 games, dominated early on, allowing the visiting Bears just one shot in the opening period. Meanwhile, the Jeffs had several legitimate scoring opportunities. Junior forward Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) nearly connected twice before the break, and fellow junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) - Amherst’s leading scorer with a school-record 18 goals on the season - narrowly missed on a header.

Amherst scored almost immediately in the second half. Just 2:32 into the period, Coleman took a feed from Montigny at the top of the box and lobbed a shot over the outstretched hands of Bridgewater goalkeeper Maura Cacciatore (Waltham, MA). At the other end, Amherst rookie netminder Jeanette Crowell (San Rafael, CA) stonewalled Bridgewater, collecting eight saves - the Bears managed eight shots in the second half - en route to her sixth shutout of the season.

Cacciatore tallied seven saves for Bridgewater, which ends its season at 9-6-3.

Amherst will now set its sights on regional opponent Endicott, who the Jeffs blanked 6-0 in the first-round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
