Women Fifth, Men 24th at NCAA Division III National Championship Meet

HANOVER, IN - Behind a fourth-place individual showing by junior Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and a 10th-place finish by rookie sensation Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), the Amherst College womenís cross country team finished fifth at the NCAA Division III National Championship Meet, hosted by Hanover (IN) College on Saturday afternoon. Amherstís men also competed and finished 24th after qualifying for their first-ever trip to the national meet.

Hamill and Garrahan, who each claimed All-America honors (Hamill for the third straight season), covered the womenís course in 21:40.8 and 22:15.6, respectively. Amherst senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) had an outstanding race as well, finishing 70th with a time of 23:30.6, while fellow senior Erinn White (Watertown, NY) placed 102nd at 23:51.5. Middlebury College clamed the womenís team title for the third time in the last five years. Wartburg College junior Missy Buttry won the individual crown with a time of 20:00.2.

Junior Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) paced the Amherst men with a 76th-place, 26:47.7 showing. Calvin College won the menís team title, while Wartburg junior Josh Moen claimed the individual championship with a time of 24:34.4.
