Men, Women Fourth at NCAA Regional Championship Meet, Both Qualify for Nationals

CUMBERLAND, ME - The Amherst College men's and women's cross country teams each finished fourth at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship Meet at the Twin Brook Recreation Complex in Cumberland, Maine on Saturday. With their best-ever showing, the men qualify for next Saturdayís NCAA Division III National Championship meet at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana for the first time in school history. The women qualify for nationals the third time in the last four years.

Juniors Mike Page (Fargo, ND), Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) and Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) finished eighth, 22nd and 34th, respectively, earning All-New England Honors for the men. Page covered the five-mile course in 26:07, just 22 seconds behind MIT junior Ben Schmeckpeper, who won the race with a time of 25:45. Katz crossed the tape in 26:39, and Morgan came in at 27:07. The top 11 finishers bettered the previous course record. Tufts University claimed the menís team title, followed by runner-up Keene State, Williams College and Amherst.

The women placed three runners in the top-10 - junior All-American Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA), first-year Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) - each of whom earned All-New England honors. Hamill (22:07) finished second to Williams sophomore Caroline Cretti, who claimed the regional crown for the second straight year with a time of 21:51. Garrahan (22:26) and Venti (22:27) finished consecutively in sixth and seventh places. Middlebury won the team title, followed by Williams and Amherst.
