Venti Claims Women's Title at New England Cross Country Championships

BOSTON, MA - With a blistering time of 17:44, Amherst College senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) topped a field of 798 runners from 52 different schools, winning the New England Cross Country Championship Meet, held at Bostonís Franklin Park on Friday afternoon. Venti edged Springfield College senior Marisa Clapp by just one second, and led Amherstís women to a fifth-place team finish behind Brown University, Trinity College, Middlebury College and the University of Connecticut. Amherstís men finished 22nd overall behind junior Matt Katzís (Tallahassee, FL) 49th-place, 25:44 showing.

Amherst placed three runners in the top 20 on the womenís side, with rookie sensation Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and junior All-American Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) trailing Venti in eighth and 20th places, with times of 18:07 and 18:24, respectively.

On the menís side, senior co-captain John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO) joined Katz in the top 100, finishing 81st with a time of 26:05. Providence College won the menís championship, followed by Brown, Boston College, Stonehill College and UMass Lowell. Brown junior Patrick Tarpy claimed the individual title with a time of 23:57.

Amherst returns to action Saturday, October 25, hosting the Little Three Championship Meet.
