September 29, 2003

CUMBERLAND, ME - Led by first-year standout Shauneen Garrahan’s (Fairfax Station, VA) first-place finish on the women’s side and senior co-captain John Stanton-Geddes’ (Glendale, MO) eighth-place finish on the men’s side, the Amherst College women’s and men’s cross country teams finished third and eighth, respectively, at the Twin Brook Invitational, hosted by Bates College at the University of Southern Maine on Saturday.

Garrahan paced the women’s squad, which ran without junior All-American Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and sophomore standout Jenny Horowitz (Waban, MA). Garrahan finished the 6k in 22:39, a new course record, and senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) followed closely behind, in third place, at 22:59. Sophomore Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) finished 12th in 23:40, while senior co-captain Erinn White (Watertown, NY) placed 27th with a time of 24:32. Sophomore Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) rounded out the top five for the Jeffs, placing 41st overall in 25:01.

Stanton-Geddes led the men’s squad, which competed without top runners Mike Page (Fargo, ND) and Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL). Stanton-Geddes finished eighth overall in 26:59, seven places behind individual champion Neal Holshulte of Williams College.
