Jeffs Claim ECAC North Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Amherst College men’s tennis team won five of six singles and doubles titles, earning first place at the ECAC North Men’s Tennis Championships, held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Vassar College. Sophomores Josh Rilla, Danny Babkes and Jon Godsall swept every set in the No.’s 1, 3 and 5 singles championships, respectively.

The Jeffs defeated competitors from Division I opponent Lehigh University in each of their five championship matches as Rilla routed Ty Esler 6-2, 6-3, Babkes bested Ryan Lloyd 6-2, 6-1, and Godsall downed Brad Nelson 6-2, 6-4. Junior Max Rettig fought off Alfredo Fernandez-Concha 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 finals, while sophomore Scott Bronner and first-year Karti Subramanian claimed the doubles championship over Andrew Shapiro and Brad Wimmer 6-0, 6-3. Amherst earned a total of 22 points over the three-day tournament, finishing four points better than second-place Lehigh.

New York University’s Richard Salem ousted Amherst first-year Jeff Lawrence in the quarterfinals en route to the No. 2 singles championship, where he defeated Lehigh’s Randall Smalley 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

Amherst returns to action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the University of Hartford.
