No. 7 Amherst, No. 15 Middlebury Play to 0-0 Men's Soccer Tie

October 4, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Seventh-ranked Amherst College and 15th-ranked Middlebury College played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in NESCAC men’s soccer action on Saturday. Both goalies were stellar in net, with sophomore Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) tallying 14 saves for Amherst (6-1-1/3-0-1 NESCAC), and junior Craig Hirsh (Verona, NJ) turning away 12 shots for Middlebury (6-0-2/3-0-2 NESCAC). Both goalies were credited with a shutout. Lockwood’s was his second of the season and eighth of his career.

Amherst had several legitimate scoring opportunities late in the second half. Most notably, senior quad-captain Frank Perry (Hartford, CT) ripped a rocket off the crossbar with 20 minutes left in regulation. Reining NESCAC Player of the Week Mike Wohl ’07 (Northampton, MA) pounced on the ensuing rebound but missed an open-netter, keeping the score deadlocked 0-0 heading into overtime.

The game was marked by physical play. Middlebury finished with 23 fouls in 110 minutes and Amherst added 12. The host Jeffs outshot the Panthers 21-20.

Amherst, which entered the game ranked first in New England, returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at NESCAC foe Connecticut College.
