Wohl Named NESCAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week; Jeffs Climb to Seventh in National Rankings

September 29, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College rookie striker Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) was named the NESCAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week on Monday after scoring the game-winner in Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Babson and Saturday’s 3-1 win over then fifth-ranked Bowdoin. Now 5-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play, the Jeffs moved into sole possession of first place in the NESCAC, climbed from 18th to seventh in the latest NSCAA/adidas national poll, and rose from second to first in the NSCAA/adidas New England rankings.

Wohl scored the first two goals and assisted on the third in Amherst’s lopsided non-league win over Babson. He then snapped a 1-1 tie with his fourth goal of the season as the Jeffs upended visiting Bowdoin, which came to Hitchcock Field as the top-ranked team in New England.

“Mike has the three things that make a striker very good - tremendous work ethic, a ton of pace and that fact that he can finish,” says Amherst co-head coach Milton Gooding. “He gets the ball constantly and consistently on the frame. It’s nice to see a local kid do so well. If he continues to work hard and improve, he’ll have a tremendous career at Amherst.”

With 10 points on the season, Wohl is tied with sophomore teammate Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) for second in the NESCAC in scoring. He’s also fourth in the conference in goals per game (0.67) and eighth in assists per game (0.33).

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at non-league foe Springfield College.
