10th-Ranked Jeffs Win at Bates, 2-1

FROM A BATES COLLEGE RELEASE

September 20, 2003

LEWISTON, ME - The 10th-ranked Amherst College menís soccer team won at NESCAC rival Bates College on Saturday, 2-1, to improve to 3-1 on the year (2-0 NESCAC). First-year Mike Wohl assisted sophomore Joe Gannon on his third goal of the season and senior quad-captain Michael York had the eventual game-winner on a penalty kick in the second half.

Wohl led a breakaway in the 15th minute and dished out his first career assist to Gannon for the early lead. York put the Jeffs ahead for good, beating Bates keeper Chris Mansfield on a penalty kick at 60:41. The host Bobcats tried to mount a comeback when junior Alex Wolff scored off a deflection at 62:32, but come up with nothing more against the stingy Amherst defense. Bates fell to 2-3 (0-3 NESCAC) with the loss.

Junior Dan Glenn had six saves for Amherst in his first start of the season, while Mansfield finished with five for Bates.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting Babson College.
