September 17, 2003

AMHERST, MA - The 10th-ranked Amherst menís soccer team fell to No. 18 Wheaton College Wednesday, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup. The Jeffs struck first on a left-footed goal from sophomore Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA), his second of the year, but allowed a goal in each half resulting in their first loss of the season.

Amherstís sole score came at 28:08 when sophomore Christian Alexander (Santa Fe, NM) crossed up a Wheaton defender in the corner before sending his first career assist to Gannon for the 1-0 lead. However, the Lyons struck back at 36:22, when first-year Ariel Tatum sent a header into the net on a free kick from junior Gabe Margolis, and scored the game-winner at 78:18, also on a header, when senior George Thomas punched home a corner kick from junior Barry Finnerty.

Amherst sophomore goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) had 11 saves in the loss, while Wheatonís Matt Pachniuk tallied nine of his own.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC rival Bates College.
