15th-Ranked Amherst Men's Soccer Opens Season with 4-0 Win Over Salve Regina

September 6, 2003

AMHERST, MA - The 15th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team opened its season with a 4-0 shutout win over visiting non-league foe Salve Regina on Saturday. Four different Amherst players scored during the lopsided win, led by sophomore midfielder Ben Lavely (Louisville, KY), who finished with a goal and an assist.

Amherst connected three times in the opening half. Midfielder Tim Canon (Easthampton, MA) ignited the barrage just over nine minutes into the game off a feed from fellow senior quad-captain Frank Perry (Hartford, CT). Sophomore midfielder Christian Alexander (Santa Fe, NM) then pushed the lead to 2-0 off a crossing pass from Lavely. Rookie forward Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA) gave the Jeffs a 3-0 cushion just before the half with his first career tally, pouncing on a rebound off a shot by sophomore forward Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA).

Amherst emptied its bench after the break, using 26 players in all, but kept up the intensity nonetheless. Lavely capped the scoring with a left-footed laser, assisted by sophomore midfielder Ian Lovett (Newton, MA). Meanwhile, thanks to a strong defensive effort, Amherst's goalies went largely untested. Sophomore netminder Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) played 54 minutes and turned away three shots with no real scoring threat, before junior Dan Glenn (Berkeley, CA) took over early in the second half.

Sophomore goalie Brian Zupan (Deep River, CT) drew the start for Salve Regina, allowing three goals with four saves in 44 minutes. Rookie Geoff Wiley (Norwell, MA) finished the game and allowed one goal in the second half. The Seahawks fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Amherst opens NESCAC play next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at conference rival Tufts University. The Jeffs finished 13-5-1 last season and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship game for the first time since 1997.
