Jeffs Ready for NESCAC Semifinals

November 5, 2003

AMHERST, MA - The fourth-seeded Amherst College field hockey team is set to face top-seeded host Middlebury College in the semifinals of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The winner moves on to the NESCAC Championship game, held at Middlebury Sunday at Noon, with an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament at stake. The Jeffs, ranked 17th in the nation at 11-4, advanced to the semifinals with a narrow 1-0 victory over visiting Colby College in the NESCAC Quarterfinals last Sunday.

Middlebury, 14-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation, bested the Jeffs 3-2 during the regular season behind two unassisted goals from sophomore Allison Smith (Darien, CT). Amherst used a pair of scores from first-year Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY) to carry a 2-1 lead into the half. However, the visiting Panthers scored twice in the second half to protect their undefeated season. Amherst junior goalkeeper K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) collected four saves in the loss.

In other tournament action, No. 2 seed Bowdoin College (13-2) will meet third-seeded and two-time defending NESCAC Champion Williams College (12-3) in a NESCAC Semifinal matchup at Middlebury Saturday at 11 a.m. Bowdoin blanked visiting Tufts University 6-0 in the NESCAC Quarterfinals, while Williams downed visiting Wesleyan University 3-1.
