Fourth-Seeded Jeffs Edge Fifth-Seeded Colby in NESCAC Tourney

November 2, 2003

AMHERST, MA - The fourth-seeded Amherst College field hockey team edged visiting fifth-seeded Colby College, 1-0, in the first round of the NESCAC Postseason Tournament on Sunday. Amherst junior Erin Leydon (Brigdton, ME) found the cage with 7:13 remaining in regulation, and fellow junior K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) posted her fourth shutout of the season in the win. The Jeffs improved to 11-4 and advance to the conference semifinals, where they’ll face top-seeded host Middlebury College next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Amherst defense, led by senior co-captain Molly Jacobs (Providence, RI), juniors Alicia Pichard (Chevy Chase, MD) and Emma Feistein (Takoma Park, MD), and first-year Amy Watson (Norwood, MA), was outstanding, allowing the visiting White Mules only two shots, and none in the second half. Sophomore Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO) tallied her first career assist on Leydon’s fifth score of the year.

Cosentino needed only one save in the win, while Colby netminder Jessica Ann Laniewski (Duxbury, MA) collected four for the White Mules, who were eliminated from the tournament and fell to 9-6 with the loss.
