Jeffs Fall to Williams in NESCAC Championship Game, 3-0

November 10, 2002

FROM A BOWDOIN COLLEGE RELEASE

BRUNSWICK, ME - The fourth-seeded Amherst College men's soccer team had its nine game winning streak snapped after being upended by second-seeded arch-rival Williams College, 3-0, in the NESCAC Championship game Sunday afternoon in Brunswick, Maine. With the loss, the Jeffs - ranked 14th nationally and second regionally in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll - drop to 12-4-1 overall and will now hope to gain an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when pairings are announced Sunday evening.

Williams pierced the scoring column 39:37 into the contest when junior forward Khari Stephenson (Kingston, Jamaica) fired a rocket into the top right corner of the net, giving the Ephs a 1-0 advantage at the break despite being outshot 11-4. Williams' first-year midfielder Josh Bolton (Penfield, NY) took a feed from junior forward Ryan Olsen (Norwell, MA) and blasted a shot into the back of the net in the opening minute of the second stanza, extending the lead to 2-0. Senior forward Alex Blake (Kingston, Jamaica) lofted a shot over Jeff sophomore goalkeeper Dan Glenn (Berkeley, CA) in the 72nd minute to round the scoring out at 3-0.

Glenn - who started in place of injured first-year netminder Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) - finished with seven saves while Eph goaltenders Nick Armington (Wenham, MA) and Robert Kirsher (Portland, OR) also combined to notch seven. Williams (14-3-0) - ranked fifth in New England - took home their second straight NESCAC crown and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
