Lockwood Named NESCAC Player of the Week

November 5, 2002

AMHERST, MA With a string of six straight wins to his credit, including a crucial 2-1 victory over visiting Tufts University in the first round of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, Amherst College first-year goaltender Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week on Monday.

Lockwood tallied four saves en route to his fourth straight shutout and sixth of the season in Saturday's regular-season finale a 2-0 win at Trinity College that earned Amherst the fourth seed and a first-round home game in the NESCAC Tournament. In Sunday's first-round victory over Tufts, which extended the Jeffs' current winning streak to eight games and improved their record to 11-3-1, he added seven saves, vaulting Amherst into the NESCAC Tournament semifinals this Saturday at 11 a.m. at top-seeded Bowdoin College.

Lockwood's rapidly shrinking 0.80 goals against average (10 goals allowed 1,121 minutes) is the best in the NESCAC, while his 4.31 saves per game average is eighth among conference leaders. He is the second Amherst player to win NESCAC Player of the Week honors this season. First-year forward Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) won the award on Monday, October 14, after combining for six points in a pair of conference wins over Conn. College and Colby.
