Jeffs Edge Tufts 2-1 in NESCAC Quarterfinals

November 3, 2002

AMHERST, MA The red-hot Amherst College men's soccer team extended its current winning streak to eight games on Sunday with a 2-1 win over visiting fifth-seeded Tufts University (9-5-1) in the first round of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. Junior midfielder Tim Canon (Easthampton, MA) scored what turned out to be the deciding tally just over 21 minutes into the game off a nifty feed from senior quad-captain Chris Kane (Marblehead, MA), who finished with a goal and an assist on the afternoon.

The fourth-seeded Jeffs (11-3-1) opened the scoring at 7:14 when senior quad-captain Pat Garvey (Suffield, CT) chipped a pass to classmate and fellow captain Roger Boulay (Norfolk, MA), who flicked the ball to Kane for a left-footed blast. Canon followed suit just 14:13 later with a shot that was actually smothered by Tufts keeper Scott Conroy (Madison, CT) on the wrong side of the goal line.

The Jumbos cut the lead to 2-1 with 4:36 left in the first half with a picture-perfect scoring strike by senior forward Garrett Dale (Upper Montclair, NJ) just over the outstretched glove of Amherst first-year goalie Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA). The score would remain 2-1, however, through a physical second half that featured a trio of yellow cards and a wealth of legitimate scoring opportunities. Dale's goal was the first scored against Amherst since Saturday, October 12 (a 3-1 win over Colby College), a span of five consecutive shutout wins for the Jeffs.

Lockwood had a personal string of four consecutive shutouts snapped but was stellar nonetheless with seven saves. Conroy tallied just one save for Tufts a diving stab in the 89th minute that robbed Amherst quad-captain Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) of his second goal of the season.

The win avenged a 3-1 loss Amherst suffered against Tufts in their season-opener on September 14. It also sends Amherst into the NESCAC Semifinals next Saturday at top-seeded Bowdoin College, where they'll face the host Polar Bears at either 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. The winner of the NESCAC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
