Jeffs Snap Wheaton's 28-Game Home Unbeaten Streak

October 30, 2002

NORTON, MA With second half goals by junior Frank Perry (Hartford, CT) and sophomore Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO), the Amherst College men's soccer team downed host Wheaton College 2-0 on Wednesday, snapping the Lyons' 28-game home unbeaten streak and extending its own winning streak to six games.

Carrying the unbeaten string over three seasons dating back to September 30, 2000, Wheaton, ranked 13th in the country and second in New England, saw its record fall to 14-4 overall. Ranked fifth in the region, Amherst improved to 9-3-1.

Following a scoreless first half, Amherst broke the stalemate in the 55th minute when Perry headed in a perfectly placed corner kick from senior quad-captain Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA). With just over 16 minutes to play, the Jeffs extended their advantage to two goals when Walker took a pass from senior quad-captain Roger Boulay (Norfolk, MA) on the left side of the goal box and tucked a shot past Wheaton senior goaltender Mike Henninger (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury).

Playing with a sense of urgency, the Lyons pressed on offense but were unable to convert on any scoring opportunities, as the Amherst defense prevented any serious threats. Jeff first-year goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) picked up three saves in posting his fifth shutout of the season, while Henninger registered five saves in the loss. Amherst outshot Wheaton, 10-8 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kick attempts.

Currently tied with Middlebury College for third place in the NESCAC, Amherst wraps up its regular season conference slate Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity College. With a victory, the Jeffs will host a NESCAC Tournament first-round game Sunday at 12:30 p.m., against an opponent to be determined. Bowdoin College has already clinched the top seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will host the semifinal and final rounds on Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10.
