Jeffs Extend Win Streak to Five with 3-0 Victory Over Williams

October 26, 2002

AMHERST, MA - After downing Wesleyan University earlier this week, the Amherst College men's soccer team blanked NESCAC rival Williams College, 3-0, Saturday at Hitchcock Field to claim the Little Three Championship. With the victory, the Jeffs - ranked sixth regionally in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III poll - extended their win streak to five games and improved to 8-3-1 overall and 5-3 in conference play while the Ephs - ranked 18th nationally and third in New England - dropped to 9-3 and 6-2.

Amherst recorded 13 corner kicks in the opening half but were unable to convert, keeping the contest scoreless at the break. The Jeffs broke the ice less than a minute into the second stanza when senior midfielder Pat Garvey's (Suffield, CT) shot was redirected in by junior forward Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT). The hosts struck again in the 55th minute when senior midfielder Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) booted a rocket through the box that was deflected in by junior forward Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ), giving Amherst a 2-0 advantage. The Jeffs tacked on another tally in the 88th minute when sophomore forward Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) took a feed from senior midfielder Chris Kane (Marblehead, MA) and fired a left-footed shot into the top corner of the net, rounding the scoring out at 3-0.

Amherst rookie goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) notched six saves to earn his fourth shutout this season. Williams first-year goaltender Nick Armington (Wenham, MA) also finished with six saves in the losing effort. The Jeffs entered the day tied with Wesleyan for fourth place in the NESCAC standings and will look to secure a spot in the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament when they battle conference foe Trinity College November 2.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at non-league foe Wheaton College.
