Jeffs Upend Colby, 3-1

October 12, 2002

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team withstood the pouring rain and upended visiting NESCAC foe Colby College, 3-1, Saturday at Hitchcock Field. Junior forward Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) paced the Jeffs with a goal and an assist while first-year forward Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) dished out a pair of assists.

Colby nearly jumped out to an early advantage but senior midfielder Pat Garvey (Suffield, CT) averted near disaster with a leaping header to send the ball wide of the net. Amherst pierced the scoring column 42:47 into the contest when junior midfielder Josh Holt (Carlisle, MA) took a cross from Gannon and netted an easy tap-in goal, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break. Cantwell then notched his second goal of the season early in the second stanza to extend the advantage to 2-0. Colby sophomore back Brian Kelly (Milford, MA) fired a shot that deflected into the back of the net in the 76th minute, cutting the lead to 2-1. The Jeffs tacked on an insurance goal in the 81st minute when senior midfielder Chris Kane (Marblehead, MA) headed the ball in off a gorgeous corner kick by Gannon.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Glenn (Berkeley, CA) finished with one save for Amherst while White Mule senior Andy Danzinger (Frederick, MD) recorded seven. With the victory, the Jeffs improved to 5-3-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play while Colby fell to 5-5 and 1-5.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at non-league foe W.N.E.C. at 4 p.m.
