Senior quad-captain Carlo Valdesolo ignited the barrage with a goal in the opening minute

Men's Soccer Steamrolls Springfield, 7-1

October 2, 2002

AMHERST, MA First-year forward Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) notched his first career hat trick, while sophomore Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) and senior quad-captain Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) each added a goal and an assist as the Amherst College men's soccer team improved to 3-2-1 with a 7-1 win over visiting Springfield College (4-5-1) on Wednesday.

Valdesolo ignited the barrage in the first minute off a nifty feed from junior forward Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ). Gannon followed suit with all three of his goals before halftime, and Walker added his first career goal also before the break to give Amherst a commanding 5-1 lead at the intermission. Springfield sophomore midfielder Mike Fregosi (Carmel, NY) managed to crack the scoring column with 4:05 left in the first half, assisted by junior Kevin Caster (Wilbraham, MA), but it was all the offense the Pride would muster.

Cantwell and junior midfielder Valentin Burlacu (Bucharest, Romania) added a pair of goals in the second half to cement the win for the Jeffs. Amherst sophomores Robert Lane (Philadelphia, PA), Josh Holt (Carlisle, MA) and Andrew Syfu (Hobart, IN) chipped in with an assist each.

The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
