A three-time All-NESCAC selection, Vernicek is one of the top offensive linemen in school history

Vernicek Named Division II/III All-Region by New England Football Writers

November 25, 2002

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College senior left tackle Rob Vernicek (Montville, NJ) was one of 28 players named to the 2002 All-New England Division II/III All-Star Team, as selected by the New England Football Writers.

A three-time All-NESCAC selection and a first-team pick this fall, the 6’ 6”, 285-pound Vernicek finished his career as one of the best offensive linemen in Amherst history. He started all eight games as a first-year as the Jeffs averaged 142.3 yards rushing. During his sophomore season, the first of two straight All-NESCAC campaigns, Amherst upped its rushing output to 169.4 yards per game. He improved dramatically as a junior and, predictably, the rushing attack followed suit - the Jeffs averaged a whopping 204.4 yards on the ground despite a wealth of injuries in the offensive backfield. In 2002, Amherst led the NESCAC in rushing offense (192.9 yards per game) and surrendered just seven sacks all season long.

The 2002 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Star team consists of eight players from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), including Vernicek, and seven players each from the Northeast 10 and New England Football Conference, five players from the Freedom Football Conference and one player from the University of New Haven.

The team will be honored at the annual New England Football Writers Captains & Awards Banquet on Thursday, December 5, at Lantana’s Restaurant in Randolph, Mass. For ticket info contact Dick Lipe at Bentley College (781) 891-2334.
