Zito, Otieno Earn NESCAC Football Player of the Week Honors

November 12, 2002

AMHERST, MA Amherst College senior wide receiver J.P. Zito (Coral Gables, FL) saved perhaps the best game of his career for his collegiate finale on Saturday, torching visiting arch-rival Williams College for seven catches, 179 receiving yards and a trio of touchdown grabs in a dramatic and improbable 45-35 win over the previously undefeated Ephs, earning NESCAC Football Offensive Player of the Week honors. Amherst first-year tailback Ngai Otieno (Gloucester, MA) got in on the act as well, earning NESCAC Football Rookie of the Week honors after rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns, as the Jeffs, who finished their season at 6-2, denied Williams a perfect season for the fourth time in the history of the rivalry and snapped the Ephs' 15-game winning streak.

Zito hauled in respective touchdown catches of 33, three and 69 yards all from sophomore quarterback Marsh Moseley (New Orleans, LA) the first of which knotted the score at 7-7, while the next two helped put the game out of reach in the third quarter. He finishes the 2002 season as the fourth-leading receiver in the NESCAC, averaging 4.25 catches and 76.1 yards per game. His seven touchdown catches are second most in the conference.

Seeing significant action for just the second time this season, Otieno came out of nowhere to take the game over in the fourth quarter, cementing the win with a 43-yard touchdown scamper with 3:31 left in regulation. He also logged a 34-yard pass reception that led to his one-yard touchdown plunge just after halftime.
