Ryan, O'Connor Named Field Hockey All-NESCAC

AMHERST, MA Amherst offensive standout Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) and defensive stalwart Molly O'Connor (Baltimore, MD) were each named to the 2002 NESCAC Field Hockey All-Conference Team on Thursday.

Ryan, a junior midfielder, earned Second-Team All-Conference honors after tying for the team lead with eight points on three goals and two assists, upping her career totals to 29 points on 11 goals and seven assists. She scored game-winning goals in the Jeffs' first two victories of the season, a 4-1 win at M.I.T. on Tuesday, September 10, and a 2-0 win over visiting Smith College on Thursday, September 19. She also assisted on the game-winner in a key 1-0 conference win over visiting Conn. College on Wednesday, October 23, which improved the Jeffs' overall record to 5-7 and helped vault them into postseason contention.

O'Connor, a senior co-captain on defense, was also a second-team pick. She helped limit opponents to 21 goals in 1,085 minutes, placing Amherst fifth in the conference in scoring defense.

Despite a roster depleted by graduation, Amherst won four out of its last six games to finish 7-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play, earning the seventh and final seed in the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, where they fell to eventual conference champion Williams College in the tournament quarterfinals.
